Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate interns will begin their experience in the Harris Lab by learning basic lab assisting skills such as media preparation, glass sterilization, and reagent stocking. This training period introduces students to the lab environment and will help them to understand and appreciate the many day-to-day tasks required to run a successful research program. Importantly, interns will have opportunities to meet senior lab members and learn about current projects in the lab. Students are expected to volunteer their time as a lab assistants for a minimum of 6 hours a week for one semester. After this time, students will have an opportunity to develop a research project of their own in close collaboration with a senior lab member and regular meetings with Professor Harris. Research may be classified as Directed Research for credit, Scholarship Research (ex. UROP), or a Part Time Paid Research. Students who are particularly interested in fundamental biological research in general areas of biochemistry, genetics, virology, and/or cancer biology are encouraged to apply by emailing Professor Harris at rsh[at]umn[dot]edu (please include a cover letter, resume, and academic transcripts).

PhD Studies

The Harris Laboratory is always keen to recruit exceptional PhD students. Rotation opportunities are ongoing, with one each summer and three others throughout the academic year. However, prior to contacting the Harris Laboratory, each interested student must first apply to one of the following programs:

Most of these programs also require an application to the University of Minnesota Graduate School. Successful applicants to other doctoral or combined programs will also be considered.

Postdoctoral Positions

The Harris Laboratory continually accepts applications from top-caliber PhD graduates. Applicants must have a PhD (pending), 2-3 first author papers, and a set of clearly defined goals.
