American Society for Virology Meeting
Minneapolis, MN 2019
A few years prior to the 2019 ASV Meeting hosted by my home institution, the University of Minnesota, I attended the 2017 International Herpesvirus Workshop in Ghent, Belgium. It was my first international research conference as well as the first presentation of my thesis research on the interaction between APOBEC3 proteins & Epstein-Barr virus. The 5-day conference introduced me to an innumerable amount of interesting research projects, but perhaps the most indelible memory was the one-of-a-kind "Acyclobeer" that was procured by the then-graduate students of the University of Liège.

This delicous Belgian-style beer sparked my own desires to develop a novel beverage. As fortune would have it, the opportunity arose when it was announced that ASV 2019 would be hosted by UMN. I quickly reached out to my close friend and colleague, John Cossette, whose father also owned the local brewery, LynLake Brewery, to collaborate on a Minnesota-style beer. We used Minnesota-grown grains, hops, and wild rice to create Minnfluenza, a uniquely-Minnesotan beer, as well as a small derivitave post-production blueberry infusion, to create the perfectly-suited ASV 2019 beverages.
